CRABWOOD NEWSLETTER
May / June 2014
Dear Crabwood members,
Time for spring clean and a new look for the newsletter. With the sun finally making an appearance it’s time to put away the winter clothing and start to enjoy cycling instead of enduring it. Welcome back to David Doherty who having just left the navy has re-joined the club as a full member, he made a good start to season by being the fastest Crabwood rider in the opening time trial. For those of you have satellite TV there has been some exciting racing from the Pro’s so far this season, with the Spring Classics providing some close racing. Young and rising star Brit Adam Yates taking a surprise but well deserved stage win he also took overall victory in The Tour of Turkey. Wiggo is looking in good condition, by winning The Tour of California. Claire has been on her travels again, she had a girl’s trip to Italy to watch a rather wet Milan – San Remo. She also had a trip to Northampton to watch a stage finish of the first Women’s Tour of Britain. Not content with that she has organised the Crabwood’s annual trip to Le Tour, this year we are letting the Pyrennees tire our legs out. So thanks again Claire for organising yet another trip. The Crabwood web site is currently out of action; hopefully we will launch a new one sometime later this year. You can still keep in touch with the time trials and other news by using this link to a Facebook page (you don’t have to be signed into Facebook to view it). www.facebook.com/crabwoodcc
Mad cow?
Claire runs into a spot of bother, with her club mates just spectating.
Time trials.
There has been some close racing so far this season in the Crabwood evening time trials. All the events so far have been held on the P164.
17-04-14
With a favourable wind there were some fast times, with everybody breaking evens. There was even a rare appearance by John Tunney.
Result -Crabwood riders. David Doherty 26.02 Alan Bigwood 26.22, John Tunney 28.25
There was a very good time posted of 22.29 by Paul Ashley of the Fareham Wheelers, to win the event.
01-05-14
Just 11 riders braved a thundery evening, with a heavy shower just as the race started to make all the riders wet, especially Pat.
Result – Crabwood riders. Pat Lafford 25.54, David Doherty 26.58, Alan Bigwood 27.46
With Adam Curtis, of Primera 24.16, to win the event.
08-05-14
A very windy evening. With a strong tailwind to start with, that turned into a strong headwind for the last 1.5 miles over the heath made for a very slow finish. With Simon just beating David by 3 seconds to be the best of the Crabwood.
Result- Simon Wheeler 26.35, David Doherty 26.38, Alan Bigwood 26.51, Claire Newman 27.59
With Adam Curtis of Primera 24.10 to win the event again.

NEWSLETTER MARCH/April 2014
First of all I would like to thank Pat Lafford, who after many years of composing the Newsletter has decided to retire from the role. He has passed the baton on to me Alan Bigwood.
Secondly I am delighted to say Kerie Wallace accepted the committee’s invitation to become club President, we wish all the best in his new role.
The club dinner went off very well. With Kerie presiding for the first time, there was a minute’s silence for Geoff and Sue. Trevor King was the Guest of Honour, where he and Pat engaged in an entertaining question and answer session. He also told us about watching his daughter Dani at the London Olympics, he also told us about his own Olympic career competing as a Biathlete in the 1980s. And as usual there were a few cross toasts.
Gary Evans was awarded Club person of the year, for his hard work in arranging Geoff and Sue’s funerals and the eulogy he wrote and delivered. He certainly wasn’t awarded club person of the year for wearing a Crabwood jersey that was two sizes too small.
After a long and very wet winter there is finally a whiff of spring in the air. Having said it was very wet, the rain seemed to miss the Sundays when there was a social ride. Well almost, ask Claire Pat and JSB about their ride back from The Brushmakers, I seem to remember them moaning about a little light shower.
It’s that time of year again when the lure of the stop watch has arrived. So it’s time to dust off the Time trail bikes and dig out the skin suits and put those silly helmets on. Let’s see if someone can challenge Dave for the President’s cup this year.

Cyclo Cross 29th December
Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles) was in scintillating form at the Southampton Sports Centre as he led from the front to take the win in the challenging conditions. The course soon cut up and made conditions slippery as the early morning hard frost gave way to a slushy surface. 2nd place Mike Cotty(Wheelbase/Cannondale) and Stuart Bowers(Hargroves Cycles) completing the podium.
Steve Davies (no not the snooker player), took 1st place in the combined vets/womens/junior race. And well done to Gary Evans our Cyclo cross champion who came in 44th.
THANK YOU to all those who helped run this event.
Q: What do you call an artist who sculpts with bicycle parts? Answer at the end of the newsletter.
